For most people, it is common to experience some tooth sensitivity when eating or drinking hot and cold foods; however, when your sensitivity is coupled with pain, you may have a bigger problem. Within each of your teeth is something called dentin. Dentin is protected by your tooth enamel on the crown (above the gums) and protected by cementum in the roots (below the gums). Dentin is also greatly affected by cold and heat. When it is exposed to extreme temperatures, dentin causes the nerves in your teeth to register pain and sensitivity.

Your tooth’s dentin can become exposed from a variety of things, including:

  • Excessive consumption of highly acidic foods
  • Aggressive brushing
  • Extreme usage of teeth whitening products
  • Lack of dental hygiene, leading to tooth decay
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth

To treat your extreme tooth sensitivity or pain, our dentists may recommend a variety of treatments, depending on the cause of your pain. Simple treatments may include desensitizing toothpaste, or a dental crown, inlays, or bonding. However, if you are experiencing pain and sensitivity due to gum disease, our dentists will recommend gum treatment or even a gum graft to re-cover the roots of your teeth. To help determine the cause of your sensitivity, our dentists may use a digital X-ray and thus be able to provide you with a more accurate, personalized treatment plan.
